The Number Story 3 and 4 is a very clever little book – two
books in fact – that work very hard to help young children to
understand numbers.
In a mix of rhyme and prose, the author shows how important
numbers can be in helping the world to ‘work’. For example,
the Number 11 is illustrated by looking at the Apollo 11 moon
landing. It’s kept simple but will allow the parent/teacher to
discuss, say, space travel. The number of pawns in chess help
to illustrated the Number 16. Most counting books count balls
and boots etc. But not this book. In this book, for the Number
13, the reader will be told that boys will often celebrate a
‘Coming of Age’ party. This originality, I think, will very much

help the book to stand out in a bookshop full of counting
books.

In Book 4, the author looks at the way numbers helps us to
order things. But, just like in Book 3, there are no boring balls
and boots. In this book, numbers help to decide who was 3rd in
