Susan Bogert Warner, known by the pen name Elizabeth Wetherell, was a significant American author recognized for her contributions to religious and sentimental fiction. Born on July 11, 1819, in New York City, she developed a literary voice shaped by strong moral and spiritual influences. Her writing often combined emotional depth with religious reflection, making her works widely read in the nineteenth century. She gained lasting recognition for The Wide, Wide World, a landmark in children's and domestic fiction that emphasized faith, perseverance, and personal growth. Writing primarily in English, Warner created narratives that explored inner life, ethical choices, and the role of belief in everyday struggles. She frequently collaborated and shared intellectual space with her sister, Anna Bartlett Warner, who was also a writer. Warner spent much of her later life in Highland Falls, where she continued her literary and religious pursuits until her death on March 17, 1885. Her legacy remains influential in shaping early American religious and sentimental literature.
