Inhaltsangabe

A novel of warring lodges and divided loyalties, Moonchild is Aleister Crowley’s most audacious work of fiction—part occult thriller, part satirical mirror of his age. On the eve of the Great War, a young magician, Cyril Grey, and his Tao-wise mentor, Simon Iff, attempt a perilous experiment: to shape destiny from its first spark, conceiving a “moon-child” under the strict correspondences of lunar magic. Their work draws the attention of a rival cabal—the Black Lodge—and the ensuing conflict moves from salons and studios to secret temples in Paris, London, and Italy. The setup is pure intrigue; the atmosphere, rich with tarot, Qabalah, and the period’s spiritualist vocabulary. Yet the novel’s center of gravity is philosophical. Crowley turns the plot into a primer on will, discipline, and balance—Thelemic doctrine tempered by Taoist poise—while lampooning the era’s pomposity and credulity. Long before “weird fiction” had a canon, Moonchild fused high ceremony with sardonic humor and roman-à-clef portraiture. Readers of occult literature, decadent modernism, and esoteric satire will find equal pleasures here. As Crowley’s second and final novel, it remains a singular document of the occult revival’s inner life—and a live debate about how, and whether, power should be used.

This expanded volume includes a carefully prepared text with unobtrusive guidance including a concise glossary mapping the book’s symbols and systems as well as chapter-by-chapter end-notes to clarify technical terms and historical allusions; a roman-à-clef guide correlates characters with their real-world counter- parts; and a new introduction situates the novel in its time and place. The result keeps the narrative swift for first-time readers while giving initiates plenty to explore after the last page.
