Faith is not Belief Far from being the substance of religion, belief has now become its main hindrance. Yet religious consciousness is naturally present in all human beings, whether they like it or not, each time they are faced with finitude and with the certainty of death, be it theirs or, even more so, that of others. Whereas no other modality of consciousness can provide an answer for this type of question - neither scientific consciousness nor philosophical consciousness per se - each religion offers a possible meaning in this respect. Whatever their differences, religions essentially recommend a reversal of values under the perspective of finitude and death. Natural or rational ethics are circumscribed to values correlated to the secular world, but sacred values aim to pull individuals from considerations of identity alone and thereby take larger considerations into account, from a community, to humanity to the world as a whole. Faith is nothing more that the trust that can be put into the answer that is given thus, within the framework of a particular religion. But confusion between faith and belief has led certain scrupulous minds to inhibit their religious consciousness and to consider it as a deficit in rationality. However, neither religious consciousness, nor religious ethics necessarily require adherence to beliefs that have been inherited from societies where religions emerged and whose language was steeped with supernatural imagery. They require the fashioning of a personal spirituality, far removed from authentic religions, even less. This essay is an attempt to articulate the religious and secular figures of consciousness in the wake of the intellectual disaster wrought by over a century of postmodern relativism.
