The idea of ‘interculturalism’ has received much attention from academics and policy makers in Europe and North America, notably in the context of debates about multiculturalism and its alleged failure to address the contemporary ‘crisis of difference’. The European Union, for instance, declared 2008 as the ‘Year of Intercultural Dialogue’, and at the same time the Bouchard-Taylor Report was a powerful advocate for a policy of interculturalism in Québec. Interculturalism and intercultural dialogue are, however, concepts that require a great deal of deconstruction. Interculturalism and the Politics of Dialogue provides an overview of the history and theory of these ideas, and of the arguments and counter-arguments between multiculturalists and interculturalists. Despite the high hopes and expectations of their advocates, interculturalism and intercultural dialogues offer no easy option, and through a series of detailed case studies the book also explores the problems that are encountered when seeking to put theory into practice.
