Within the country, forces led by Nelson Mandela attempt change through non-violence only to be thwarted by government violence which begets more violence and sabotage. The Apartheid government responds with harsh punishments and the suspension of democratic rights of due process. Is a race-based civil war brewing? Outside the country, the United Nations works to end Apartheid by isolating South Africa. Now, the lives of everyone opposing Apartheid are at risk. Is there no escape? Is there a lesson here for America?
