Blockchain is a new method of recording transactions within a business network which adds efficiency and trust to the exchange of assets between network members. When asking the simple question “what is blockchain?” one is often confronted with a barrage of technical gobbledygook and seldom given a concise, business explanation of the technology, how it works and its key benefits. I address this by explaining blockchain in clear terms that can be understood by a business practitioner wishing to find out how this new technology can change their organisation for the better.I will focus on blockchain used by businesses, where the technology is applied across a business network where the participants are known. I will touch upon cryptocurrencies, but only to explain the difference between them and blockchain for business.

I founded Palfreyman Ventures in August 2017 after retiring from IBM after some 20 years. We offer informed, objective advice for the application of new technologies for sustained business advantage. My last two years at IBM were spent in the global blockchain client-facing team, where I collaborated with organisations intrigued by blockchain, but often unsure what business benefits the technology could bring, and how to get started. Our team developed education materials and delivered these initially in workshops and later virtually. We built an incremental engagement model to ensure our customers got their project off the the best start. I was (and remain) passionate about the use of Design Thinking and Agile Development as a key part of realising the considerable benefits from the emerging technology. Before my blockchain adventure, I enjoyed a number of equally exciting assignments. I worked with our government customers to help them realise organisational and societal benefit from commercial technologies. I developed balanced, holistic approaches to cyber security before it became fashionable! I helped develop IBM’s original mobile / wireless business back in the 2000’s and led a team driving the project services aspects of our Grid Computing business - which formed the foundations of cloud computing. I also experienced the power of open innovation first hand by leading our emerging open source services business. My fun continues since leaving IBM. I’m a Non-Executive Director at Novus Property Solutions - an ethically focused, forward looking, fast growing construction company looking to embrace digitisation. I’ve worked with the University of Sheffield on the application of blockchain to the future of transport, and currently supervising postgraduate business students at the University of Leeds Business School. I’m also providing advice and guidance to a number of startup companies. Outside work, I enjoy family time, walking and cycling in North Yorkshire, swimming and music performance.
