Written by an experienced literacy and ESOL practitioner, this book is an attempt to identify the literacy needs, and improve the literacy skills, of people within the UK. It has been written in order to assist learners who struggle with aspects of literacy (including spoken and written grammar) and as a practical guide and resource for literacy tutors to support their learners within a range of environments, including further education colleges, schools and work-based learning providers. It also provides ideas on issues surrounding the understanding of English for speakers of other languages, which are rooted in both theory and practice. The ideas and resources within the book have been developed, with positive results, over a number of years whilst working with learners in those environments.Revised and extended for the 2018 edition, further resources have been added to support achievement of L2 functional skills and GCSE English.Kevin Norley has been a teacher for over twenty years, having taught in schools, further education colleges and for work-based learning providers within the UK and also schools in Africa. The realisation, during that time, that so many people were held back as a result of a lack of basic literacy and language skills, and of how straightforward it could be to remedy the situation, served as an inspiration for this book.
