Le narrateur rencontre, dans un autobus, un jeune homme au long cou, coiffé d'un chapeau orné d'une tresse au lieu de ruban. Le jeune homme échange quelques mots assez vifs avec un autre voyageur, puis va s'asseoir à une place devenue libre. Un peu plus tard, le narrateur rencontre le même jeune homme en grande conversation avec un ami qui lui conseille de faire remonter le bouton supérieur de son pardessus. Cette brève histoire est racontée quatre-vingt-dix-neuf fois, de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf manières différentes. Mise en image, portée sur la scène des cabarets, elle a connu une fortune extraordinaire. " Exercices de style " est un des livres les plus populaires de Queneau.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Né au Havre le 21 février 1903, Raymond Queneau est romancier, poète, dramaturge et mathématicien. Il fait ses études au lycée du Havre puis à la faculté des Lettres de Paris. Après avoir fréquenté le groupe surréaliste, dont il subit l'influence, il entre en 1938 aux Éditions Gallimard où il est lecteur, traducteur de l'anglais puis membre du comité de lecture. Cofondateur de l'OuLiPo, membre de l'Académie Concourt à partir de 1951, il a également dirigé l'Encyclopédie de la Pléiade. Parmi ses nombreuses oeuvres, citons Exercices de style, Zazie dans le métro, Les Fleurs bleues. Il meurt à Paris le 25 octobre 1976.
