Almost from the beginning of his career, Brancusi began to break away from naturalism, confronting his sculptural subjects with purely abstract form. While the smooth and often geometric forms of his sculptures may reflect Art Deco design, his work remains strikingly modern.

The painters Natalia Dumitresco and Alexandre Istrati are heirs of the Brancusi estate. Together the authors reconstructed Brancusi's Paris studio at the Centre Pompidou, which is now open to the public.
