Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) started his artistic career by concentrating on drawing. Convinced that this was the foundation he needed to become a painter, he did little else for the first three years of his career. He was a talented drauftsman long before he became an experienced painter, and drawing would remain an integral part of all his subsequent artistic activities.
Published to accompany an exhibition at the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in Arles, Van Gogh Drawings includes more than 30 of the artist's prints and drawings. This volume also pays special attention to the influences that shaped van Gogh's graphic work, and features a range of images that inspired van Gogh at specific points in his practice. These include prints and images from illustrated magazines which van Gogh collected and which strongly influenced his early work, and replicas of 17th-century prints and Japanese prints which inspired his remarkable reed pen drawings made in Provence. Van Gogh absorbed a multitude of influences and merged them in works that were highly innovative in style and often also in technique, producing one of the most remarkable drawn oeuvres of the 19th century.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Sjraar van Heugten (né en 1957) a étudié l'histoire de l'art à l'université d'Utrecht. De 1988 à 2010, il a exercé au Van Gogh Museum d'Amsterdam, dont il a été le directeur des collections à partir de 1999. Aujourd'hui historien de l'art indépendant, il est l'auteur d'un grand nombre d'ouvrages et d'articles, principalement consacrés à Van Gogh et à ses contemporains parmi lesquels trois volumes (en tant que co-auteur pour le troisième) du catalogue des dessins de Van Gogh présents dans la collection du Van Gogh Museum.   Depuis 2014, Sjraar van Heugten a conçu plusieurs exposition pour la Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles dont Van Gogh : couleurs du Nord, couleurs du Sud (catalogue publié par Actes Sud, 2014), et Les dessins de Van Gogh : influences et innovations (catalogue publié par Actes Sud, 2015).

This book considers the influence of other artists' prints and drawings on Van Gogh's graphic oeuvre. The book juxtaposes a selection of Van Gogh's work - some forty drawings and prints - with a range of works that inspired him. These include prints from illustrated magazines and 19th-century prints, which he avidly collected and which strongly influenced his early work, as well as replicas of 17th-century prints, Japanese prints and other works which inspired his remarkable drawings with the reed pen in Provence. Van Gogh absorbed a multitude of influences, which combined to create drawings that are highly innovative, not only in style but often also in technique. The exhibition and this accompanying publication will pay close attention to those and other aspects of one of the most remarkable drawn oeuvres of the 19th century.
