This book is about the photographer and artist Alexander Rodchenko (1891 - 1956), who worked during the most dramatic years of the first half of the twentieth century. More than just a pictorial narration of a recent past, the history of Russia, his photographs are a testimony to the history of photographic art itself.

Rodchenko regarded himself as an "inventor of new discoveries derived from painting". He was a Russian avant-garde artist working across a wide range of media: painting and graphics, sculpture and architecture, design and photography. Stylistic innovations, quests for new creative possibilities were very much in the air troughout Europe at that time. It was as if the en- world was being constructed anew, rainvented.
Photography ranks as one of Rodchenko's most important <&#59; it is the area in wihich his particular spirit and nature are most fully embodied. It is no simple coincidence that his output in this genre is so diversified in theme and quantitatively so great. Rodchenko might please or provoke, but we never - of his photography, not least because of its variety.
