La simulation numérique précise de phénomènes physiques complexes a acquis une importance considérable ces dernières années. Du point de vue mathématique, de tels phénomènes mènent à des systèmes conséquents d'équations aux dérivées partielles ou d'équations intégrales. Vu l'importance de telles études, plusieurs stratégies de résolution ont été développées pendant les dernières décénies. Une classe de ces méthodes est la méthode des volumes finis, qui est l'objet de ce symposium. Les présents actes sont constitués d'une collection d'articles présentés au Premier symposium international sur les Volumes finis pour applications complexes. Une grande partie des contributions est consacrée aux méthodes de discrétisation et d'analyse numérique. Les sujets de ces articles couvrent un spectre allant de l'étude des ordres d'approximation à l'établissement de preuves de convergence.

Scientific computing, which involves the analysis of complex systems in real applications with numerical simulations, is becoming an important field of research in itself, in relation to theoretical investigations and physical experiments. In many cases, the underlying mathematical models consist of large systems of partial differential equations, which have to be solved with high accuracy and efficiency. Among the successful methods, in particular for discretizations on unstructured grids, are the Finite Volume schemes. The first symposium of the series was held in Rouen in 1996.
