Merrow-Smith... lives the slow-paced life of a 19th-century landscape painter while reaching today's global market. --The New York Times
Beautiful and evocative... documenting the changing seasons of the southeastern French region so idealised in Peter Mayle's books, his artworks include colourful still lives and vivid sea and landscapes, as well as some wonderfully stern-looking self-portraits --The Times
Perfect little pictures of vegetables from his garden or fruit from the market, and luminous, ever-changing Provençal landscapes. --The Guardian
The British artist Julian Merrow-Smith moved to the south of France in 1998. Postcard from Provence started as a project in 2005 to make a small painting each day. It quickly developed into a meditation on painting and life in rural France, and started to attract a loyal audience. By 2009 Merrow-Smith had completed over 1300 paintings. He was emailing an image of his day's work to over four thousand people all over the world, and had drawn attention from the international press. Here, in this much-anticipated book, the artist distils five years work for us in to one notional year. Through his luminous evocations of landscape and simple but intensely observed still-life paintings, Julian Merrow-Smith leads us through the changing seasons and narrates for us, in paint, a year in glorious Provence.
