Navigating Sustainability in Polymer Materials: Principles, Practices, and Future Directions explores the evolving landscape of sustainable polymer science and offers a timely and comprehensive examination of one of the most pressing challenges facing the polymer industry today: how to embed sustainability at every stage of material design, development, and application. As global environmental concerns intensify and regulatory pressures increase, the demand for sustainable alternatives in polymers has never been greater. Organized into twelve focused chapters, it covers a diverse range of polymer classes and end-use sectors, including coatings, adhesives, elastomers, polyolefins, bioplastics, and synthetic fibers. Readers will explore sustainable practices in raw material selection, formulation strategies, product life cycle thinking, waste management, recycling technologies, and circular economy models.
Each chapter is authored or curated by experienced scientists and researchers from both academia and industry, ensuring the content reflects both scientific rigor and practical applicability. The result is a balanced blend of foundational principles, applied research, case studies, and emerging trends in sustainable polymer innovation. The book is designed for a wide audience: materials scientists, R&D professionals, chemical engineers, product developers, environmental consultants, academic researchers, and graduate students. It also serves as a valuable reference for policymakers and business leaders seeking to understand the evolving sustainability landscape in polymers.
Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise, guide strategic decision-making, or simply stay ahead of the curve, this book offers a rare, consolidated knowledge base and foresight to navigate the complexities of sustainability in polymer materials today—and tomorrow.

Dr. Jomin Thomas is a highly motivated polymer scientist and enthusiast experienced in working with polyurethane, acrylic polyol, alkyds, elastomers, and epoxides for polymer products such as coatings, composites, and tires. With an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering (2016) from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) and a Masters in polymer technology (2018) from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), India, his passion for polymers started during his multiple polymer internships in India and Saudi Arabia. With a start-off to his industrial career as a researcher in Asian Paints, India he has worked on sustainable raw material synthesis for coatings. Following his PhD from the prestigious University of Akron’s Polymer Engineering program, he then worked at Tesla Nanocoatings which pioneered carbon nanotubes for Industrial coatings. He has also been the lead chemist at Nippon paint automotive Americas working on several novel sustainable coating technologies and currently works as the Principal R&D Scientist with Simiron, Inc developing innovative coatings and polymers for the floor coating industry. Dr. Thomas has years of global experience in the polymer industry authoring over 20 publications with multiple global corporations and academic institutions. He is also an active part of the industry wide substantiation efforts of biobased and sustainable polymers, and carbon footprint calculation and reduction guidelines.
Dr. Renuka Subhash Patil is a polymer formulation scientist with diverse experience in polymer adhesives, membranes, battery solutions, coatings, and composites. With an undergraduate degree in polymer and surface engineering technology (2017) from the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), followed by Polymer Engineering PhD from the prestigious University of Akron, her interests and research spanned across the fundamental adhesion science, membranes, sustainable composites, UV cure and functional coatings. With a start-off to her industrial career as an intern at 3M, India, she currently works as a Senior scientist at Henkel technologies concentrating on polymer solutions for the EV industry. Dr. Patil has authored over 10 publications on polymer membranes, coatings, polymer sustainability etc in addition to numerous patents on innovative technologies in adhesives and coatings alike. She is also an active part of the polymer coatings and adhesive industry developing new technologies to cater to the expanding EV market.
