Der Begriff Performanz, 1955 vom britischen Sprachphilosophen John L. Austin geprägt, bezeichnet prozesshafte, «performative» Aspekte, die anstelle starrer Zustände und festgeschriebener Normen ins Zentrum der Betrachtung rücken. Er hat Eingang in unterschiedlichste Bereiche von Wissenschaft und Technik gefunden und taucht in jüngerer Zeit auch im architektonischen Kontext auf. In den Bau- und Forschungsprojekten von EMI Architekt:innen (EMI) ist Performanz seit Langem ein wiederkehrendes Thema. Besonders deutlich sichtbar wird dies in der Installation Anthropomorphe Form für den Schweizer Kunstpreis (2019), dem prämierten Entwurf für eine touristische Infrastruktur auf dem Ostgrat der Jungfrau (2012) oder im 2022 fertiggestellten Wohnhaus an der Stampfenbachstrasse in Zürich.
Das eigene Werk bildet den Auslöser für eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung von EMI mit der Performanz, die nun in diesem englischsprachigen Buch dargelegt wird. Die Texte von Elli Mosayebi, Joseph Schwartz, Laurent Stalder und Nina Zschocke – alle als Dozierende an der ETH Zürich tätig – sowie künstlerische und dokumentarische Fotografien, Pläne und Zeichnungen beleuchten das Phänomen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren
Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architekten , gegründet 2005 von Ron Edelaar, Elli Mosayebi und Christian Inderbitzin in Zürich, haben sich durch herausragende Bauten, städtebauliche Planungen, Ausstellungen und Publikationen international einen Namen gemacht. Einen Schwerpunkt in ihrer Forschung, Lehre und Praxis bildet der Wohnungsbau.
Eli Mosayebi ist Gründungspartnerin von Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architekten in Zürich und lehrt seit 2018 als Professorin für Architektur und Entwurf am Departement Architektur der ETH Zürich.
Joseph Schwartz führt sein eigenes Ingenieurbüro in Zug. 2008–2023 lehrte er zudem als Professor für Tragwerksentwurf am Departement Architektur der ETH Zürich.
Laurent Stalder lehrt als Professor am Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur der
ETH Zürich.
Nina Zschocke ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin und Dozentin am Institut für Geschichte und
Theorie der Architektur der ETH Zürich.
EMI Architekt:innen , founded in Zurich in 2005 by Ron Edelaar, Elli Mosayebi, and Christian Inderbitzin, have gained international recognition for their outstanding building and urban designs, exhibitions, and publications.
Elli Mosayebi is a founding partner with EMI Architekt:innen and a professor of architecture and design at ETH Zürich’s Department of Architecture.
