Dom Hans van der Laan ist heute eine Kultfigur der europäischen Nachkriegsarchitektur. Der niederländische Benediktinermönch und Architekt widmete sein Leben der Suche nach fundamentalen Prinzipien der Architektur. Seine Theorien zu Zahlenverhältnissen und Masssystemen hatten Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts grossen Einfluss auf die Architekturtheorie.
A House to Live With ist die erste Monografie über Wohnhäuser nach Entwürfen van der Laans und einiger seiner Schüler aus dem Kurs für kirchliche Architektur, den er zwischen 1946 und 1973 in s-Hertogenbosch leitete. 16 davon, entstanden zwischen 1966 und 1985, werden mit neu aufgenommenen Fotografien und zahlreichen eigens für dieses Buch neu angefertigten Zeichnungen im Detail vorgestellt und auf ihre Kompositions- und Gestaltungsprinzipien hin analysiert. Beleuchtet werden mathematische Verhältnisse von Zahlen und Volumen, die in diesen Entwürfen eine wichtige Rolle spielen, und der starke Einfluss antiker römischer Architektur auf van der Laans Entwürfe. Betrachtet werden zudem das Zusammenspiel von Haus und Garten, Haus und Innenhof und die Position des einen grossen Tisches im Haus, der für van der Laan zentrale Bedeutung zukam.
Die verständliche Weise, in der diese Aspekte hier dargestellt werden, ist für heutige Architekturschaffende von grossem Wert.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren
Caroline Voet is an associate professor in the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven and runs her own firm, Voet Architectuur, in Antwerp. Her previous book, Dom Hans van der Laan: A House for the Mind , won a DAM Architecture Book Award in 2018.
Hans W. van der Laan is a Dutch architect and a nephew of Dom Hans van der Laan, with whom he worked closely on some of the projects documented in the book.
Caroline Voet ist ausserordentliche Professorin an der Fakultät für Architektur der KU Leuven und leitet das Büro VOET architectuur in Antwerpen. Ihr Buch Dom Hans van der Laan. A House for the Mind wurde 2018 mit einem DAM Architecture Book Award ausgezeichnet.
Hans W. van der Laan ist Architekt und ein Neffe von Dom Hans van der Laan, mit dem er bei einigen der im Buch dokumentierten Projekten eng zusammenarbeitete.
