Der Basler Max Alioth (1930–2010) war eine bedeutende Figur der Deutschschweizer Architektur- und Kulturszene, unter anderem engagierte er sich im Schweizerischen Werkbund und beim Aufbau von kulturellen Einrichtungen. Zudem hat er – zusammen mit seiner Frau Susanna Biedermann – die École Supérieure des Arts Visuels in Marrakesch (ÉSAV) gegründet und die Pläne für deren Gebäude entworfen. Alioth war auch Mitgründer des Architekturmuseums in Basel, aus dem das Schweizerische Architekturmuseum S AM hervorgegangen ist.
Diese erste Monografie über Max Alioth beleuchtet sein Schaffen aus vielfältigen Perspektiven. Ausgewählte Bauten aus dem Zeitraum 1961–2007 werden ausführlich vorgestellt, mit Fotografien, Plänen und Texten. Darunter sind Einfamilienhäuser, eine Altersresidenz, Mehrfamilienhäuser, das Antikenmuseum Basel und die Sammlung Ludwig sowie die erwähnte École Supérieure des Arts Visuels in Marrakesch.
Daneben präsentiert das Buch auf 35 Seiten Skizzen, Zeichnungen und Aquarelle Alioths. Abgerundet wird es durch Texte des Architekten Roger Diener, von Andreas Ruby, dem Direktor des S AM, und von Vincent Melilli, dem Direktor der ÉSAV, sowie von Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus.

Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus is an art historian and publicist. She was a co-founder and in 1984–2006 the first director of Basel’s Architecture Museum (now Swiss Architecture Museum S AM).
Beat Keusch führt seit 1992 sein eigenes Grafik Design Studio BKVK in Basel. Davor war er, nach seiner Ausbildung zum Grafiker, in den Basler Agenturen GGK und Stalder & Suter tätig.
Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus ist Kunsthistorikerin und Publizistin. 1984–2006 leitete sie das von ihr gegründete Architekturmuseum Basel (heute Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum S AM).

Moreover, the book introduces Alioth also as a visual artist through reproductions of sketches, drawings, and watercolours. Essays by architect Roger Diener, the S AM’s director Andreas Ruby, the director of ÉSAV Vincent Melilli, and art historian and publicist Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus round out this volume.
