In this book, an Active Shed Unbalancing System was described and constructed on a narrow fabric loom using a computer controlled hydraulic actuator. It was first used as a passive shed unbalancer which confirmed previous findings that weaving resistance (W.R.) or Beat-up Force (B.U.F) could be substantially reduced and then as an active system that, when properly timed, gave a further 20% reduction. The advantage of the active system is that it eases beating – in of weft and also helps to minimize pick slipping back during the remaining part of the loom cycle. Also, with the active system it might be possible to weave a tighter fabric than previously possible and also have potential of improving the aesthetic qualities or cover of the woven fabric. Sometimes, fabrics of high sett, i.e. above or close to construction limits are necessary to meet certain end – use requirements, e.g. water proof, industrial filters, canvas, tarpaulin, etc. Thus, the book gives an account of the experiments and the literature survey of the patented and potential unbalancing systems for commercial looms.
