Defeated by the united Germanic tribes, Rome's pride and joy - its three best legions - lay defeated in the mire of the Germanic swamps and forests in 9 AD. Fear of the northern barbarians grew in the streets of Rome, and the call for revenge became ever louder. But several years would pass before the Roman eagle would once again sink its talons into the territory north of the Rhine. In 15 AD, Aulus, the adopted son of the tribune Claudius Marcinus, arrives as a decurio of the cavalry with the Roman legions of Gaius Julius Germanicus in the dense primeval forests north of the great river. Abducted by the Romans from the land of the Bructeri as a five-year-old boy and raised in the legionaries' camps as the tribune's servant, Aulus himself joins the legion at the age of thirteen. Five years later, a strong young man, he returns to the land that was once his home. There he learns of his true origins and of the man who killed his parents. He turns away from the Romans and finds his homeland again among the Bructeri tribe. The legionary Aulus Marcinus becomes the Germanic warrior Gerowulf. Filled with hatred and disappointment, searching for the truth and seeking revenge, he joins the hordes of the Cherusci chieftain Sigurd, whom the Romans call Arminius.
