In einem systematischen Vergleich wird die Bedeutung multiethnischer Großreiche für die Geschichte der europäischen Moderne neu bestimmt. Europas Großreiche waren geprägt von ethnischer Differenz und räumlicher Vielfalt. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes vergleichen systematisch vier europäische Empires im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert das Britische Empire, die Habsburgermonarchie, Russland und das Osmanische Reich und erklären, was die Beziehungen zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie sowie zwischen Herrschern und Beherrschten so spannungsreich und vielfältig machte.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren
Frithjof Benjamin Schenk ist Professor für Osteuropäische Geschichte und Neuere Allgemeine Geschichte am Historischen Seminar der Universität Basel.
Ute Schneider ist Professorin für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte an der Universität Duisburg-Essen.
Martin Schulze Wessel ist Professor für die Geschichte Ost- und Südosteuropas an der Universität München und leitet das Collegium Carolinum.
Prof. Dr. Maurus Reinkowski ist Ordinarius für Islamwissenschaft an der Universität Basel und korrespondierendes Mitglied der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften.
Dr. Martin Zückert ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Geschäftsführer des Collegium Carolinum, Forschungsinstitut für die Geschichte Tschechiens und der Slowakei.
