Inhaltsangabe

Australia has the highest proportion of overseasborn immigrants of any Western country, with over200 language backgrounds. This bookexamines how the working patterns of immigrantworkers have changed through the 1980s to the 21stcentury in response to globalisation, economicrestructuring, industrial relations changes andincreasing emphasis on skilled migration. Based onsurvey data and interviews with immigrants acrossthe occupational spectrum, the book presents atypology for understanding the genesis and nature ofmodern work patterns from unskilled (factory fodder)through semi skilled (upskilled manual workers)to highly skilled (including multiculturalmediators). The book finds that the workingpatterns and concerns of immigrants continue todiffer from those of the native workforce. Issuesof exploitation and work intensification, through tomore subtle concerns about under-employment andblocked career paths continue tocharacterise the working lives of Australianimmigrant workers. Overall, however, immigrants'occupational status is improving within thisrapidly changing economic and structural context.
