Seafood consumption has drawn the attention ofresearchers from a variety of disciplines. One ofthe concerns is whether fish consumption is healthyor risky. While fish is considered a component of ahealthy diet, the EPA and FDA issued advisoriesregarding the consumption of certain species of fishdue to possibility of methylmercury contamination.Using a sample of people living in the coastalcounties of Alabama and Mississippi who engage inrecreational fishing, this study uses multivariateanalysis to assess the effects of demographic,behavioral, and attitudinal variables on high-riskfish consumption. Previous research has revealedphenomenon known as the white male effect, which isassociated with risky behavior. Our study shows thatwhite males in the deep-South are indeed more likelythan women and African-Americans to consume high-risk fish. We also find that that knowledge ofgovernment risk advisories regarding methylmercuryand fish consumption actually increases, rather thandecreases, the consumption of high-risk fish.
