This study investigated the performance of 74Hispanic limited English proficient fourth gradebilingual students on problem solving process skillsinvolving routine three-digit subtraction storyproblems with regrouping. This study had twopurposes. The first purpose was to identify wherethe students were having difficulties inmathematical problem solving in relation to fiveprocesses. By identifying which of these processesare problematic for Hispanic limited Englishproficient students, educators will be better ableto proceed with appropriate instruction in theneeded areas to improve subtraction problem solvingperformance. The second purpose was to examine therelationship between each of the five problemsolving process skills and arriving at the correctfinal answer to a subtraction problem. This willassist educators in adjusting instruction to focuson the specific process skills that are closelyrelated to arriving at the correct final answer.This is important as educators are under increasingpressure to have students arrive at correct finalanswers to all types of problems on state andnational mathematics tests.
