Flow problems with free and moving boundaries areencountered in many engineering applications. Flowin dams, pollutant transport in unconfined aquifers, viscous flow on the ocean free surface, molten metalflows, casting, sloshing in tanks, oil recovery, andopen channel flows are examples in this category. Inmodeling steady and unsteady flow with viscous fluidinterfaces, the location of the interface is also apart of the overall solution and needs to bedetermined. Accurate representation of the interfaceis one of the major challenges in simulation of thisclass of fluid dynamics problems, particularly whenthe flow has nonlinear characteristics. The finiteelement method (FEM), based on an approximation offield variables over a finite element mesh, hasturned out to be one of the major numericaltechniques for handling these types of problems. TheFE numerical model in this book is formulated usingan interface-capturing technique. The adoptedinterface-capturing technique is based on analgorithm derived from the level set method (LSM),and the Eulerian framework constitutes the mainbasis of the formulations.
