Questionslikewhatprobabilityis,orwhatitisabout,orhowprobability entersphysicsareofasubtlekind. Theyaredi cultinvariousways,often mixedupwiththeenormouscomplexityandtheinescapablelackofmat- maticalrigorinthephysicalapplication,orwiththefoundationalproblemsof quantummechanics,wheretheprobabilisticignoranceconcerningthevalu esof certainphysicalquantitieshasevenbeenelevatedtoamatterofprinciple. At present,theunderstandingofprobabilityinphysicsisalmostaspersonalasthe understandingofquantumtheory. Theaimoftheconferencewasthustofocusonideasaboutprobabilityin physics,itsmeaninganditsphilosophicalimplications,byreviewingthed i erent facetsofprobabilityinphysicsinitsmodernsettingsandbytakingintoaccount modernquantumtheorieswithoutobservers,wheretheoriginofprobabilityis notmysti edbydogmatism. Thereviewsweregiveninone-hourtalks,andthediscussionswereheldin theformofroundtables,whereshortercontributionswerealsogiven. Thespeakerswereaskednottodilutethemainthemesoftheconference withtechnicalitiesandtofocussharplyontheissueofprobability.
