The structural control techniques are widely recognized as an effective means to reduce the response of inadequately damped systems. Its applications ranges from small rotating machines to large civil engineering structures subjected to earthquake or wind loading. Buildings and bridges that have been constructed using structural control shows that it is a valuable and promising engineering tool. The present research work mainly consists of two parts. In the first part of the study, harmonic and seismic response of the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to which a passive and semi-active tuned mass friction damper (TMFD) is attached is investigated. Second part of the study focuses on the investigation of effectiveness of multiple tuned mass friction dampers (MTMFD) over a TMFD; here response of the multi-story structure and the bridge with TMFD is compared with response of the same structures with MTMFD. This study is intended to provide an insight to the feasibility of potential application of these devices in vibration control of structures and bridge.
