This book covers the various aspects of the 3D cellular confinement systems (geocells) related to soft ground improvement. The improvement due to the provision of different geosynthetic reinforcements is quantified and compared in the book. In addition to the exhaustive and the up to date review of the literature, the book covers the simplified methodologies and 3D numerical modelling techniques for the design of the 3D cellular confinement systems. The important concepts are illustrated with the help of a case study highlighting the field application of the geocells. A new and innovative application of geocell to protect buried pipelines is discussed in the book. The book also covers the manufacturing and design details of the bamboo cells, which are considered as the cost effective alternative to the geocells. At the end, behavior of the geocells under cyclic loading has also been discussed keeping in view of the possible machine foundation applications. Dr. Amarnath Hegde has obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, India. Currently, he is working as Assistant Professor in Indian Institute of Technology Patna.Dr. T. G. Sitharam has obtained his Ph.D. from University of Waterloo, Canada. Currently, he is working as Professor in Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.
