Man Ray (1890–1976) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des Dadaismus und Surrealismus und gilt aufgrund der Vielschichtigkeit seines Werkes als avantgardistischer Impulsgeber für die Fotografie- und Filmgeschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Der Katalog begleitet die Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Jesuitenkirche in Aschaffenburg und vereint ca. 100 Werke unterschiedlichster Werkphasen und Medien. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf Man Rays „Rayographien“. Um 1919/20 begann der Künstler mit Fotogrammen zu experimentieren. Dabei legte er Alltagsgegenstände auf Fotopapier und setzte sie verschiedenen Lichtquellen aus. Die verschwommenen Konturen dieser „Fotos ohne Kamera“ fanden bei den Dadaisten und später bei den Surrealisten großen Anklang. Der Dichter Jean Cocteau bezeichnete Man Ray daher auch als „Poeten der Dunkelkammer“.
