Over the last decade, the terms “digital ecosystem” and “digital economy” have become ubiquitous in relation to strategy, both for the scientific community and business practice. This has mirrored an increasing concern among executives to steer their organizations in the rapidly changing business environment. Since traditional strategic concepts are of little value in keeping up with current speeds in the digital cosmos. This thesis offers a structuralist framework for developing a strategy of the future with digital ecosystems beyond the digital economy and its empirical laws. By using both deductive and inductive methods, based on secondary data, it presents a future-oriented corporate growth framework – entailing the assistance in deciding “where to play”, “in which role to play” and “how to play”. Thus, by means of a use case from LEGO Group, the implications of the new way of playing and thriving in this day and age are highlighted.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren
Sebastian Badde has been studying International Business Administration in Germany and China for over three years. His educational background has given him a broad-based approach from which to develop and execute corporate growth strategies. He especially enjoys working on strategic issues that can provide value to corporations in today’s fast-paced business environment.
Prof. Dr. Jan-Frederik Engelhardt lehrt an der BSP Business School Berlin, Campus Hamburg, Allgemeine Betriebswirtschaftslehre mit dem Schwerpunkt Marketing. Er war unter anderem als Leiter Finanzen bei einem Technologieunternehmen und einem TecDax notierten Unternehmen sowie zuletzt in einer der größten Managementberatungen Deutschlands verantwortlich für die Telekommunikations- und Medienindustrie. Prof. Dr. Engelhardt publiziert Lehrbücher, Buchbeiträge und regelmäßig in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften. Er ist Mitgründer und geschäftsführender Gesellschafter bei der GRC Engelhardt Managementberatung.
