Neben dem Bauhaus hat wohl keine andere Bewegung der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts unseren Alltag so sehr beeinflusst wie die De-Stijl-Gruppe um Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) und Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian, mit Wassily Kandinsky und Kasimir Malewitsch einer der Gründerväter malerischer Abstraktion, schuf streng geometrische Gemälde, die heute als Ikonen der Moderne gelten. Ihre charakteristische Struktur aus einem schwarzen Raster, in das Flächen in den Grundfarben eingepasst sind, führt längst ein reges Eigenleben in Kunst und Mode, Werbung und Populärkultur. Im Zentrum der Publikation steht zum einen Mondrians Weg in die Abstraktion - von den Anfängen im Umfeld der neoimpressionistischen Luministen bis hin zu seiner neoplastizistischen Periode. Zum anderen wird der interdisziplinäre Ansatz von De Stijl anhand von historischen Möbeln, Kleidern, Architekturzeichnungen und -modellen herausgestellt. With the exception of the Bauhaus, probably no other art movement of the first half of the twentieth century has had such an influence on our everyday lives as the De Stijl group around Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian, along with Wassily Kandinsky and Kasimir Malevich one of abstract painting's founding fathers, created strictly geometrical paintings that today are icons of modernism. Their characteristic structure with a black frame in which fields of primary colours are inserted has long assumed a life of its own in art and fashion, advertising and popular culture. One focus of the publication is Mondrian's development towards abstraction - from his early works in the circle of the neo-impressionist luminists to his neoplasticistic periode . A second focus is De Stijl's interdisciplinary approach, which will be shown with period furniture, clothes, and architectural drawings and models.
