Softcover. Zustand: As new. BASEMENT (illustrator). SOFTCOVER BOOK, NO MATTER WHAT AMAZON SAYS!!! Glossy illus. wraps with yellow lettering and spine; 301 pp. with profuse color illustrations. This is a paperback edition. An in-depth look at one of the US's most extensive collections of African art, within the context of the the works' original rituals. I give this book 5 stars because it's clear the author charted his own path here and it makes for an interesting book on African art. There are other books with higher quality photos, slicker paper, that are more "artistic" coffee table material. I love them.not all, but often, if they aren't reprinting the same common photo examples. However, here the author really takes you into the village, introduces you to the tribal members, and you vicariously participate in the dance. It's not only interesting, but it's a record of a way of life that may not be around too much longer. You'll even find out what a heddle pully is and why it's important. You don't get that in the artistic coffee table book! (Jim Gwin). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 108409

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Orangish cloth with color glossy dj. 301 pp. with profuse color illustrations. "Drawing on The Baltimore Museum's renowned African Collection, this illustrated exploration of African rituals uniquely encourages readers to look beyond the solitary artifact and toward an understanding of African music and dance as fully sensory experiences." "The one hundred objects presented here are parts of ceremonies that rely on sounds, sights, smells, and tastes to deliver their ultimate effects. Color reproductions of the objects, including masks, sculpture, and ceramics, are accompanied by brief essays explaining the contexts within which each was created. The essays focus on costumes; dance, movement and gesture; music and other sounds; storytelling; audiences; staging, and lighting. Field photographs and archival images help bring to life the African ceremonial experience, which we can better understand with the aid of this groundbreaking work."--BOOK JACKET. "Published on the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Baltimore Museum of Art, 2004"--Colophon. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 158484

About the book >.>.> This publication commemorates the ninetieth anniversary of The Baltimore Museum of Art?s founding and the fiftieth anniversary of the donation of the African art collection by Janet and Alan Wurtzburger. Their contribution established a permanent display of African art within the museum, highlighting a significant commitment to this field amidst the institution's ongoing expansion. The Wurtzburger gift reinforced a trajectory initiated by the museum's exhibition programme, beginning with the 1936 exhibition, African Negro Art, and followed by An Exhibition of African Art in 1946, noted for showcasing African art from American collections. Prior to the Wurtzburger's donation, significant contributions included ancient Egyptian and Coptic pieces from Florence Levy and Blanche Adler, alongside numerous gifts from collectors like Saidie A. May and Robert Garrett, which enriched the museum?s offerings.Exploring the aesthetic appreciation for African art, the Wurtzburgers joined a tradition exemplified by other collectors, such as the renowned Cone sisters, who recognised the artistic value of African objects in the context of modern art movements. The collection has continued to grow through the contributions of various donors, including Mr. and Mrs. A. Harvey Schreyer and numerous others, who have provided an extensive array of artefacts that significantly enrich the museum?s narrative.Principal author Dr. Frederick John Lamp has meticulously curated a selection of objects from diverse geographical and cultural contexts across Africa. This collection encompasses various media, including ceramics, textiles, beadwork, and ritual art, chosen for both their aesthetic merit and cultural significance.
