Edward Hopper (1882-1967) verkörpert eine amerikanische Erfolgsgeschichte – doch dieser Erfolg ließ lange auf sich warten. Heute, ein halbes Jahrhundert nach seinem Tod, gilt Hopper mit seinem unheimlichen und einzigartigen Sinn für Stimmungen und Orte als Gigant des amerikanischen Realismus.
Hopper fängt in seinen Bildern das Leben in der modernen Großstadt ein: Diner, Cafés, Schaufenster, Straßenbeleuchtung, Tankstellen, Bahnhöfe, Hotelzimmer. Die Szenen sind geprägt von leuchtenden Farben, Kontrasten und dem Spiel von Licht und Schatten sowie hart konturierten Figuren, die Teil ihrer Umgebung sind, und doch zugleich wie Fremdkörper darin wirken. Es herrscht eine unheimliche Atmosphäre, geprägt von Einsamkeit und Anspannung. Als Kontrast dazu strahlen Hoppers in ländliche Umgebung gesetzte Bilder Ruhe und Optimismus aus.
Dieser Band präsentiert Hoppers wichtigste Werke und stellt einen Maler vor, der die Psyche Amerikas zu Kunstgeschichte machte.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Rolf G. Renner (* 1945) promovierte 1976. Er hat an den Universitäten von Göttingen, München, Charlottesville (Virginia) und Columbia (New York) unterrichtet und zahlreiche Artikel in verschiedenen Zeitschriften veröffentlicht. Seit 1988 ist er Pofessor an der Universität Freiburg.
