Inhaltsangabe
Die Bruderschaft der Präraffaeliten gründete sich 1848 als Geheimbund. Die Künstler verwarfen klassische Ideale und die damals vorherrschenden Kunsttheorien und entwickelten stattdessen einen spirituelleren, naturalistischeren und persönlicheren Ansatz. Gründungsmitglieder waren William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais und Dante Gabriel Rossetti, später kamen vier weitere Mitglieder hinzu, um eine siebenköpfige „Bruderschaft“ aus Malern, Dichtern und Kritikern zu bilden.
Bewusst wandten sie sich von klassischen Kompositionen ab, für die exemplarisch Raffael stand (daher der Name). Stattdessen ließen sie sich vom Mittelalter und den schillernden Farben der italienischen Frührenaissance inspirieren. Ihre Hauptthemen waren ursprünglich religiöser Natur, schöpften aber auch aus der Literatur, wie am Beispiel von Sir John Everett Millais’ berühmter Ophelia (aus Shakespeares Hamlet) zu erkennen ist. Beeinflusst von den Theorien John Ruskins, widmeten sie sich auch dem eingehenden Studium der Natur.
Dieses Buch stellt anhand der Schlüsselwerke der Präraffaeliten ihre reaktionären Prinzipien, ihre schillernden Farben, ihr Interesse an Liebe, Tod und Natur und ihren enormen Einfluss auf den Symbolismus und weitere spätere Kunstrichtungen vor.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Heather Birchall hat am Victoria & Albert Museum und bei der Tate in London umfassende Ausstellungen organisiert, bevor sie als Kustodin für Alte Kunst an die Whitworth Art Gallery der University of Manchester wechselte. Bis 2014 war sie Mitglied der National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). Heute lebt sie in San Francisco. Als Spezialistin für viktorianische Kunst verfasste sie Buchbeiträge und Artikel über John Ruskin, die Beziehung zwischen Malerei und Fotografie und die britische Aquarellmalerei.
