Marc Chagalls (1887–1985) Malerei ist ein komplexer Bildteppich, in dem religiöse Symbole, Motive aus der Folklore des heimatlichen Witebsk, aus der Welt des Zirkus und der jüdischen Tradition zu heiter-melancholischen Traumbildern verwoben sind. Sein unverkennbarer, so heiter-schwerelos anmutender Stil hat ihn zu einem der populärsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts gemacht. Bei all ihrem ätherischen Reiz sind seine Kompositionen dennoch reich und vielschichtig in ihren Anspielungen. Sie verweben nicht nur Farben und Formen miteinander, sondern auch seine jüdischen Wurzeln mit seinen späteren Erlebnissen in Paris, religiöse Symbolik mit erotischen Gesten, Symbole der Hoffnung mit Zeugnissen der Gewalt.
Diese Einführung macht nicht nur mit einem oft verkannten Werk vertraut, sie zeichnet auch eine wechselvolle Lebensgeschichte nach, in die sich alle großen Dramen des letzten Jahrhunderts eingeschrieben haben.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren
Rainer Metzger studierte Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Deutsche Literatur in München und Augsburg. Er promovierte 1994 über Dan Graham und war Kunstkritiker bei der Wiener Zeitung Der Standard. Er verfasste zahlreiche Kunstbücher, darunter Bände über Van Gogh und Chagall. Seit 2004 hat er einen Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte an der Kunstakademie Karlsruhe inne.
Ingo F. Walther (1940–2007) wurde in Berlin geboren, studierte mittelalterliche Geschichte, Literatur und Kunstgeschichte in Frankfurt und München. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Bücher über die Kunst des Mittelalters sowie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Bei TASCHEN erschienen unter anderem Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts und Codices illustres.
