Ihre großformatigen Aktbilder von distanziert-kühler Sinnlichkeit und ihre Lifestyle-Porträts der Reichen und Berühmten machten sie zum umschwärmten Star der Pariser Hautevolee und erlaubten ihr ein exzessives und skandalumwittertes Glamourleben.
In einem unverwechselbar eigenen Stil, der Elemente des Kubismus mit der Formensprache der Neuen Sachlichkeit verband und den Geschmacksvorstellungen ihrer bourgeoisen Mäzene durchaus entgegenkam, porträtierte sie neben solventen Auftraggebern aus der High Society und Aktmodellen auch Künstlerinnen und Szenegrößen wie die Sängerin Suzy Solidor, die, wie de Lempicka selbst, einen selbstbewussten, neuen Frauentypus verkörperten. De Lempickas berühmtes Autoportrait, das sie am Steuer eines grünen Bugatti zeigt, eine Auftragsarbeit für die deutsche Zeitschrift Die Dame, wurde zu einem Sinnbild für Geschwindigkeit, Eleganz und weibliche Unabhängigkeit, die de Lempicka in zahllosen sexuellen Beziehungen zu Männern wie Frauen auslebte.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Gilles Néret (1933–2005) war Kunsthistoriker, Journalist, Schriftsteller und Ausstellungskritiker. Er organisierte mehrere Kunst-Retrospektiven in Japan und gründete das SEIBU Museum sowie die Galerie Wildenstein in Tokio. Er leitete Kunstzeitschriften wie L'Œil und Connaissance des Arts und erhielt für seine Publikationen 1981 den Prix Élie Faure. Zu seinen Veröffentlichungen bei TASCHEN gehören Dalí – Das malerische Werk, Matisse sowie Erotica Universalis.
