Religión, Renacimiento y Reforma. Este fue el trío ideológico que dio forma al mundo del retratista del siglo XVI Hans Holbein, el Joven (1497/1498-1543), una figura clave del Renacimiento nórdico. Su talento le llevó a Suiza, Bélgica, Italia e Inglaterra y le granjeó mecenas y modelos tan importantes como Enrique VIII, Tomás Moro, Ana de Cléveris y el abanderado de la Reforma Thomas Cromwell.
Aunque empezó con un repertorio de obras religiosas, que mantuvo, Holbein se considera ante todo uno de los retratistas más notables de la historia del arte occidental. Su mirada minuciosa se alió con su dominio como dibujante y con una capacidad casi sobrenatural para captar los detalles, desde las texturas de los suntuosos ropajes de la época hasta los elementos ornamentales de las estancias en las que posaban sus modelos. Combinaba su mimetismo meticuloso con una acertada amalgama de rasgos pictóricos regionales. Consiguió efectos asombrosos uniendo el realismo del estilo flamenco con la composición de la baja Edad Media alemana y la grandeza formal italiana.
Durante su estancia en Inglaterra, Holbein, que se convirtió en pintor oficial de la corte de Enrique VIII, realizó obras de propaganda reformista y retratos de la realeza con vistas a afianzar el estatus de Enrique como monarca y nuevo jefe supremo de la Iglesia de Inglaterra tras la Reforma inglesa. Su retrato de Enrique VIII de 1537 no sólo se considera un hito del arte del retrato, sino también un documento simbólico del monarca reformista y de la dinastía de los Tudor. Durante este periodo turbulento, Holbein también creó tallas de madera anticlericales, y dibujó y pintó mercaderes luteranos, embajadores itinerantes y las sucesivas esposas de Enrique VIII.

Norbert Wolf se graduó en historia del arte, lingüística y estudios medievales en las universidades de Ratisbona y Múnich. Obtuvo su doctorado en historia del arte en 1983. En 1992 escribió su tesis profesoral en Munich, sobre los retablos tallados del siglo XIV. Posteriormente ha sido profesor visitante en Marburgo, Fráncfort del Meno, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Erlangen-Núremberg e Innsbruck. Ha escrito ampliamente sobre historia del arte, incluyendo muchos títulos en TASCHEN, como Diego Velázquez, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Caspar David Friedrich, Expresionismo, Arte románico, Pintura paisajista y Simbolismo.
