El escritor, artista y estudioso francés Achille-Constant-Théodore-Émile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879), ferviente admirador del antiguo Egipto y de la cultura oriental, es famoso por ser uno de los egiptólogos que más influyeron en la disciplina, mucho antes de que ésta sentara sus bases.
Prisse emprendió sus primeras exploraciones en 1836, cuando documentó distintos yacimientos arqueológicos por todo el valle del Nilo, a menudo bajo su seudónimo egipcio, Edris Effendi. Su primera publicación de notas, dibujos y calcos (una especie de frottage) fue Les Monuments Égyptiens, una colección de 51 láminas más bien modesta pero alabada en círculos tanto populares como intelectuales. Alentado por su éxito, Prisse regresó a Egipto a finales de 1850 para ampliar su trabajo en L'Histoire de l'Art Égyptien, que, junto con su primer volumen, ofrece una visión completa del arte egipcio.
