Das Leben von Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) steckte voller Schwierigkeiten und Widersprüche. Als junger Mann schließt er sich der katalanischen nationalistischen Bewegung an und steht der Kirche kritisch gegenüber, während er gegen Ende seines Lebens wie ein Asket lebt und sich ganz dem Bau einer einzigen, aufsehenerregende Kirche widmet: dem Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. In seiner Jugend ein dünkelhafter Dandy, der sich gerne den schönen Seiten des Lebens hingibt, wirkt er 1926, als er bei einem Straßenbahnunfall in Barcelona ums Leben kommt, so verwahrlost, dass Passanten ihn für einen Bettler halten.
Gaudís unvergleichliche Architektur spiegelt diese Ambivalenz wider. Von der hispano-arabischen Matrix der Casa Vicens bis zu den schimmernden Texturen und Skelettformen der Casa Batlló – in seinem Werk verschmelzen die unterschiedlichsten Einflüsse, von natürlichen Formen und neuen Materialien bis zu Orientalismus und Katholizismus, zu einer einzigartigen Modernista-Ästhetik. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Rainer Zerbst studierte von 1969 bis 1975 moderne Sprachen in Tübingen und Wales. Von 1976 bis 1982 arbeitete er an der Universität in Tübingen wo er 1982 auch promovierte. Zerbst ist seitdem als Kunst-, Literatur- und Theaterkritiker tätig.
