Elegido libro de arquitectura del año en el Festival Internacional del Libro de Arte y de Cine de Perpiñán, en Francia, el Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed de Frédéric Chaubin explora 90 edificios situados en 14 ex repúblicas soviéticas. Estas estructuras representan lo que Chaubin considera la cuarta edad de la arquitectura soviética, una época de prosperidad desconocida que abarca de 1970 a 1990.
Al contrario que en los años 1920 y 1950, durante este periodo no surgió ninguna gran escuela ni tendencia. Estos edificios representan un impulso caótico fruto de un sistema en decadencia. Después llega el despliegue de la arquitectura parlante en los últimos años de la URSS: un crematorio adornado con llamas de hormigón (Crematorio, Kiev), un instituto tecnológico con un platillo volante estrellado en su techo (Instituto de investigación científica, Kiev), un centro político que observa como un Gran Hermano (Casa de los Sóviets, Kaliningrado).
El mosaico de estilos y las estrategias extravagantes de estos edificios los convierten en vestigios extraordinarios de un sistema que se desintegraba. Con su diversidad y exotismo local son testimonio de la vasta geografía de la URSS y del final de la Unión Soviética, de los agujeros de una red en expansión. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Frédéric Chaubin fue redactor jefe de la revista francesa de estilo de vida Citizen K durante dos décadas. Desde el año 2000, publica regularmente obras sobre arquitectura en las que se combina texto y fotografía, y presenta exposiciones y conferencias complementarias. Chaubin aborda su investigación arquitectónica desde una perspectiva histórica. Tras la investigación que culminó con la publicación de CCCP en 2011, se ha adentrado en los vestigios del mundo medieval con su libro Stone Age. Ancient Castles of Europe, publicado por TASCHEN.

A summer camp, inspired by sketches of a prototype lunar base, lays claim to Suprematist influence (Prometheus youth camp, Bogatyr). Then comes the "speaking architecture" widespread in the last years of the USSR: a crematorium adorned with concrete flames (Crematorium, Kiev), a technological institute with a flying saucer crashed on the roof (Institute of Scientific Research, Kiev), a political center watching you like Big Brother (House of Soviets, Kaliningrad). In their puzzle of styles, their outlandish strategies, these buildings are extraordinary remnants of a collapsing system.
