Der James Dean der Kunstwelt Michael Kimmelman, der Chefkritiker der New York Times, hatte den 1938 in Rutherford, New Jersey, geborenen Robert Smithson, der 35jährig während der Arbeit an einem neuen Werk 1973 bei einem Flugzeugabsturz tödlich verunglückte, kurzerhand zum »James Dean der Kunst« erklärt. Neben der Parallele des frühen Todes vor allem wohl wegen der phänomenalen Wirkung von Robert Smithsons ortsspezifscher Landschaftsskulptur Spiral Jetty im Great Salt Lake in Utah, die Kimmelman als »icon of Americana« bezeichnete. Und Robert Smithson ist es in seinem künstlerischen und theoretischen Werk ja um nichts weniger denn um Grundsätzliches gegangen – zur postminimalistischen Kunst, zur Land Art, zum künstlerischen Selbstverständnis. So konnte Spiral Jetty durch den zwischen Fiktion und Dokumentation changierenden gleichnamigen Film zur Legende werden. Eine zweite große Landschaftsarbeit ist 1971 in Europa anlässlich der Ausstellung Sonsbeek 71 in der Nähe des holländischen Emmen entstanden. Auch für diese Arbeit formulierte Smithson schriftlich und zeichnerisch seine Ideen für einen Film, zu dem er bereits erste Aufnahmen gemacht hatte. Jetzt, nach vierzig Jahren, hat Nancy Holt, Künstlerin und Witwe des Künstlers, in Zusammenarbeit mit SKOR, Amsterdam, diesen Film fertiggestellt. Das Buch dokumentiert die Ausstellung, in der drei Filme, 50 Zeichnungen sowie Fotografien gezeigt werden und arbeitet insbesondere den Zusammenhang von Landschaftskulptur und Film bei Robert Smithson heraus. A certain parallelism aside, the appellation is due to the phenomenal effect of Robert Smithson's site-specific earthwork sculpture Spiral Jetty on the shores of the Great Salt Lake in Utah that Kimmelman called an icon of Americana. And in his artistic and theoretical work, Robert Smithson was concerned with nothing less than fundamentals of this sort--Postminimalism, Land Art and artistic self-perception. In this way, Spiral Jetty has become legend through the eponymous film that oscillates between fiction and documentation. A second Land Art project was initiated in 1971 in Europe on the occasion of the exhibition Sonsbeek 71 near Emmen in Holland. Smithson had also formulated his ideas for a film about this work for which he had already begun filming. Forty years on, the artist Nancy Holt, (and Smithson's widow), has completed this film in conjunction with SKOR, Amsterdam. The book is a documentation of the exhibition which features three films as well as 50 sketches and photographs and which also specifically describes the relationship between earthwork sculpture and film in the context of Robert Smithson's oeuvre.
