Le fotografie di Christenberry accompagnano questi racconti.Nato a Tuscaloosa, Alabama, nel 1936, William Christenberry è cresciuto nel profondo Sud, dove vecchi cartelli stradali, edifici in rovina e strade sterrate hanno plasmato i suoi ricordi d'infanzia. Durante la sua prima carriera, Christenberry è stato principalmente un pittore, ma presto ha iniziato a incorporare l'uso di una macchina fotografica Brownie nella sua pratica. Nel 1961 si trasferì a New York e incontrò Walker Evans, il celebre fotografo della Farm Security Administration, che aveva documentato gli effetti devastanti della Grande Depressione nel Sud. Le fotografie di Evans, molte delle quali provenienti dalla zona di origine di Christenberry, influenzarono in modo particolare il lavoro di Christenberry come artista. Nel 1968 si trasferì a Washington, D.C., e si unì alla facoltà della Corcoran School of Art and Design, dove continua a lavorare come professore di disegno e pittura.
