Sowohl Pathos als auch Distanz sind Teile der Arbeit von Andreas Mühe. Um das unausweichliche Zusammenspiel beider Begriffe deutlich zu machen, war es der Wunsch des Künstlers, für dieses Buch im Titel »Pathos« und »Distanz« mit dem kleinen Wörtchen »als« zu verbinden. Pathos als Distanz. Nicht im Sinne eines Vergleichs wie »Ich esse lieber Äpfel als Birnen«, sondern als Verwandlung des einen Begriffs in den anderen und ihres sich wechselseitigen Bedingens. Aus Pathos wird Distanz und diese Distanz wird zur Vorbedingung, um Pathos zuzulassen. Mühes Sujets sind häufig mehrdeutig, bereits emotional und durch ihren jeweils historischen Kontext aufgeladen: Weihnachtsbäume, Kanzler, Kreidefelsen auf Rügen, der Obersalzberg. Andreas Mühe kommt aus einem theatralischen Haushalt und hat auch ein Stückchen auf der Mauer getanzt, als sie fiel. Diesem Umbruch verdankt er es mit Gegensätzen groß geworden zu sein, in Widersprüchen zu denken und einen Hauch von Dialektik anstelle der fehlenden Muttermilch aufgesogen zu haben. Darin sieht er den Ursprung seines Vermögens, immer wieder die Perspektive zu wechseln und Pathos in Distanz zu verwandeln. Die Fotografien von Andreas Mühe werden von Textauszügen des Romans 1913 - Der Sommer des Jahrhunderts von Florian Illies begleitet.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Andreas Mu¨he (b. 1979, Karl-Marx-Stadt) came to photography through an apprenticeship as a photo laboratory technician, after which he worked as an assistant to Ali Kepenek and Anatol Kotte. Mu¨he has worked as a freelance photographer and has published his portraits of actors, musicians, and artists in a wide variety of magazines and newspapers. An early supporter is F.C. Gundlach, who describes his work as being of extraordinary consequence. Since 2010, Mu¨he has exhibited his works in solo and group exhibitions at museums including the Kunsthalle Rostock, the NRW Forum in Du¨sseldorf, the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, the Benaki Museum in Athens, and the House of Photography at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.

Both pathos and distance play a role in the work of Andreas Mühe. In an effort to emphasize the inevitable interaction of these two concepts, the artist chose to link the »Pathos« and »Distance« in the title of this book with the conjunction »as.« Pathos as Distance. Not in the sense of a comparison, as in »as tasty as an apple,« but rather as a transformation of one concept into the other and their mutual dependency. Pathos becomes distance, and this distance becomes a precondition that allows for pathos. Mühe’s themes are often ambiguous, already emotional, and charged by their respective historical context: Christmas trees, chancellors, the chalk cliffs on Rügen, the Obersalzberg.
Andreas Mühe comes from a theatrical family and had also danced a bit on the Berlin Wall when it came down. It is to this upheaval that he owes the fact that he grew up with contrasts, thinks in terms of contradictions, and fed on a hint of dialectics as a substitute for mother’s milk. It is here that he sees the origins of his capability to constantly change perspective and transform pathos into distance. The photographs by Andreas Mühe are accompanied by excerpts from the novel 1913 – The Year before the Storm by Florian Illies.
