This introduction is intended to provide an orientation which allows further work and deeper critical examination by the reader. The individual chapters emphasize the parallels and differences between France and Germany, for the peculiarities and characteristics of the countries to clearly emerge. Within this comparison, however, contemporary France remains always at the centre. From case to case historical developments are also considered. Another focal point is the role played by France and Germany in the European integration.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

The Authors: Ernst Ulrich Grosse is professor of Romance philology at the University of Freiburg (Germany) where he teaches French and Italian linguistics and culture. Besides writing articles for professional journals, he has published books on a classical image in poetry, semantics, text linguistics, Old French and recently «Panorama de la presse parisienne» (1994, with E. Seibold).
Heinz Helmut Lüger studied Romance languages and philosophy, receiving his Ph.D. in linguistics in 1977. Having spent several years in France he is presently working at the University of Constance. He has published works on text linguistics and the didactic theory of foreign languages.
