Dolls are sometimes crushed by love, sometimes thrown in rage against the wall. They patiently suffer in both the roles of lifelike friend and confidant and "punchbag" for childish temper tantrums. From an adult viewpoint the children's physical maltreatment of the mini homonculi is disconcerting: at the end of childhood the dolls seem to be completely broken by love.
Once they were the reason for daddies driving hundreds of miles, accompanied by sobbing children, to find the forgotten plastic baby again; yet later they are unceremoniously packed away in boxes, sold at fleamarkets or dumped in the rubbish bin. Dolls are obviously an unusual object of socialization.
The Swiss photographer Pascal Wuest has photographed a series of dolls, revealing the scars that childhood has left on its relicts.
