Microfinance is…

- a win-win proposal
- a powerful development tool for poverty reduction
- a growth area and new business paradigm
- a movement that aims to close the gap between the rich and the poor
- a business that makes sense

Microfinance has already had a positive impact on the household budgets and quality of life for millions of people in developing countries. But the majority still lack access to financial services that can significantly raise their standard of living and better equip them to manage their lives. Closing the gap between microfinance supply and demand, the independent financial consultant Naoko Felder-Kuzu directed her book especially at the financial service providers. In the first part she gives a very personal report about her microfinance experiences, using real cases to illustrate how microfinance can work. The second part is an analytical overview of the financial service providers. The book gives a simple description of microfinance basics and provides suggestions on how to become involved in the microfinance revolution.

With regard to the increasing importance of microfinance and microfinance investments the United Nations designated the year 2005 as the International Year of Microcredit.

"One of the goals of the International Year of Microcredit is to improve statistics on the nature and scale of the penetration of microfinance. But the essential goal is to strengthen and spread the availability of good financial services, which offer the possibility and the hope to many poor people of improving their own situations through their own efforts."
Stanley Fischer, Vice Chair of Citigroup,
Chair Advisors Group for the International Year of Microcredit 2005

This book aims to introduce the powerful world of microfinance and
microfinance investments to as wide an audience as possible. To this end,
the book has largely disposed on the financial jargon (especially in Part
I) and explains in simple terms what microfinance is, how microfinance
affects millions of lives around the world, how important the development
of this industry is for all of us, and how we could take an active role in
it.
Somewhat subjective, Part I describes my personal experiences with
microfinance. I explain my initial encounters with the subject, how and
what I learned about it and how it changed the course of my career. Part II
is more analytical, discussing investment issues, efforts to measure social
returns and the investment vehicles available today.
This book is not meant to be a textbook nor a recommendation report: I am
neither a microfinance practitioner nor an expert in this field. On the
other hand, I have been, and still am, a passionate and avid learner. I
have spent the last 2 years totally immersed in microfinance, meeting
people in the industry, visiting microfinance institutions (MFIs) and their
clients and promoting microfinance to people in the private sector. While
this is not a long track record, I hope that my enthusiasm and experience
will attract others to this exciting field. There are numerous informative
books and reports written by the microfinance professionals, experts and
academics from whom I have learned much of what I know about this subject.
I have also quoted numerous passages from these experts in order to convey
their insights as accurately as possible.
