The contemporary art scene in India is still quite young and is developing as fast as the subcontinent is booming. The scene is less established than in other Asian countries such as China, Japan or Korea - but it is without partiality and less defined by the constant retrospective view onto traditional art historical structures. On the contrary, the artists make direct and personal references to what they experience and what moves them within their own surroundings. Equally direct and personal is the authors' perspective as they invite the reader on a journey through this fascinating and fast moving art scene. Both Gerard A. Goodrow and Julia Ritterskamp have longstanding connections within the contemporary art world in Western Europe, but have also sought and established contact with Indian artists and other protagonists of the Indian art scene long before the boom of the so-called "emerging markets". The book presents both established and emerging artists from India, as well as those with Indian heritage abroad. The topics range from politics to gender, from the art market to photojournalism, from abstraction to the conscious drawing on traditional techniques. The publication is enhanced by contributions from well-known experts on the Indian art scene, including Peter Nagy, Ranjana Steinrucke, Ranjit Hoskote and Desmond Lazaro.

Biografía del autor:

Gerard A. Goodrow (born 1964 in New Jersey/USA) is a freelance curator and author based in Cologne. He studied at Rutgers University, New Jersey, the City University of New York and the University of Cologne. Among the most important stations of his career are the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (1992-1996), the Ursula Blickle Foundation in Kraichtal (1994-2001), the auction house Christie's in London (1996-2003), the art fairs Art Cologne and Cologne Fine Art (2003-2008) and CIAM - Centre for International Art Management in Cologne and Dusseldorf (since 2007). Over the last 25 years, he has curated over 50 exhibitions in museums, galleries and other institutions in Germany and abroad. He is author of numerous texts and publications and has lectured extensively on international contemporary art and the global art market. His most recent book, Crossing China, was published in January 2014 with Daab. Julia Ritterskamp (born 1973 in Solingen) is an art historian with a Masters degree specialising in contemporary art and Arte Povera. She is based in Dusseldorf and has worked since 2007 as a freelance author, curator, exhibition manager and art consultant. She is also active in the fields of collection consulting, training of gallery personnel and structural advice for galleries and is a lecturer at the Heinrich Heine University in Dusseldorf. Previously, Julia Ritterskamp was employed as Managing Director of Galerie Karsten Greve in Cologne and Art Consultant at Achenbach Art Consulting Gesellschaft fur Kunstberatung in Dusseldorf.
