The carefully selected pictures published in this booklet come from the rare street photographs Adams took of urban and suburban Americans in the 70’s, at the time living near Denver, Colorado. The feeling of fateful helplessness when seeing smoke rise over the nearby nuclear weapons plant caused Adams to portray his fellow citizens in their daily routines as a metaphor about the value of life in the shadow of existential catastrophe. Robert Adams, born 1937, became a photographer in the mid-1960s. He is part of the New Topographics movement and published more than forty books, most of them focusing on the american landscape. He lives and works in northwest Oregon. Es ist nicht einfach, der langen Liste der bereits erschienen Bücher über das Werk von Robert Adams noch etwas hinzuzufügen. Zusammen mit der Fondation A Stichting, Brüssel, entwickelten wir ein kleines Heft mit einer Auswahl der für Adams sonstige Arbeit seltenen Straßenfotografien, die er in den 70’ern in der Umgebung seines damaligen Wohnortes bei Denver, Colorado aufgenommen hat. Das Gefühl völliger Hilflosigkeit beim Anblick einer Rauchwolke über der nahegelegenen Atomwaffenfabrik veranlasste Adams, seine Mitbürger bei Ihren beiläufigen, alltäglichen Routinegängen zu fotografieren, als Metapher über den Wert des individuellen Lebens angesichts der existentiellen nuklearen Katastrophe. Robert Adams, *1937, begann in den sechziger Jahren als Fotograf zu arbeiten. Er ist einer der Protagonisten der „New Topographics“ Bewegung. Bis heute erschienen mehr als 40 Bildbände zu seinen Arbeiten. Er lebt und arbeitet in Oregon.
