In its highly original form and content, the work of Ingeborg Strobl (1949–2017) picks up on yet extends far beyond the tradition of conceptual, media-based art. In her life and work, Strobl combined pronounced social competence with a critically distanced attitude vis-à-vis the conventions and excesses of a society driven by consumerism and careerist ambition. That is reflected in her empathy towards people, places and situations that are not the focus of media attention and marketing. The emphasis she placed on various media within her oeuvre also reveals her preference for what is usually regarded as peripheral and is therefore under-appreciated. Her sensitivity to animal motifs as mirror images of social rituals and contradictions as well as the connection between nature and culture fundamentally informs her oeuvre.
