However, his feat immediately turns into horror: unable to bear its unnatural ugliness, he rejects and banishes his creation… The creature learns to speak, read, and understand the world, but also to feel the weight of abandonment. Its loneliness transforms into rage, and it decides to pursue its creator in search of companionship or, perhaps, revenge…

In Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, Mary Shelley conceived a terrifying and wondrous story. Since its publication, it astonished the world and within a few years acquired the status of a “modern myth.” Between gothic novel and philosophical tale, the story of the proud scientist and his monstrous creation has captivated entire generations.

Mary Shelley (Londres, 1797 - 1851) es una de las escritoras más importantes e influyentes del siglo XIX. Fue hija del prestigioso pensador revolucionario William Godwin y Mary Wollstonecraft, precursora del feminismo moderno y autora de A Vindication of the Rights of Woman en 1792, que murió apenas diez días después de dar a luz a su hija. Con dieciséis años, Mary, por aquel entonces todavía apellidada Wollstonecraft Godwin, conoció al poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley, y enseguida emprendieron un largo viaje por Europa, hasta el famoso verano de 1816 que pasaron en Suiza, junto con lord Byron, el doctor Polidori y la prima de Mary. En esas noches concibió su ópera magna Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo, una de las novelas más leídas y estudiadas de la historia, y cuya leyenda acerca de su gestación ha suscitado mucha literatura. Viuda con apenas veinticinco años, siguió escribiendo y publicando novelas como El último hombre (1826) o Falkner (1837), y entregada a su único hijo hasta su muerte en 1851.

Mary Shelley (London, 1797 - 1851) was one of the most important and influential writers of the 19th century. She was the daughter of the renowned revolutionary thinker William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, a pioneer of modern feminism and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792, who died just ten days after giving birth to her daughter. At sixteen, Mary--then still known as Wollstonecraft Godwin--met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and they soon embarked on a long journey across Europe, culminating in the famous summer of 1816 spent in Switzerland with Lord Byron, Dr. Polidori, and Mary's cousin. During those nights, she conceived her magnum opus Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, one of the most widely read and studied novels in history, whose origin story has inspired extensive literature. Widowed at just twenty-five, she continued writing and publishing novels such as The Last Man (1826) and Falkner (1837), dedicating herself to her only son until her death in 1851.
